The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has released the GATE 2027 Information Brochure for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027. IIT Madras is the Organizing Institute for GATE 2027.

According to the official Information Brochure, Release Version 1.2 dated 10 August 2026, GATE 2027 will be conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT) for 30 test papers. The examination is scheduled to be held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027.

The online application process will be conducted through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). Candidates can appear for one or two test papers, subject to the permitted combinations.

The examination will be conducted in forenoon and afternoon sessions, with the sessions scheduled from 9:30 AM–12:30 PM and 2:30 PM–5:30 PM.

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria

There is no age limit for appearing in GATE 2027.

A candidate is eligible if they are:

  • Currently studying in the 3rd year or higher of any undergraduate degree programme; or

  • Have already completed a government-approved degree programme in:

    • Engineering
    • Technology
    • Architecture
    • Science
    • Commerce
    • Arts
    • Humanities

Candidates studying in the 5th/6th/7th semester or higher of certain programmes such as M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B.V.Sc. and B.Sc. Agriculture/Horticulture/Forestry are also eligible as specified in the brochure.

Candidates pursuing or holding qualifying degrees from countries other than India must satisfy the eligibility conditions specified in the official brochure.

Important

There is no upper age limit for GATE 2027.


GATE 2027 Test Papers

GATE 2027 will be conducted for 30 test papers. Candidates can appear for one or two papers, but two-paper candidates must select a combination permitted by the official list.

New Changes in GATE 2027

GATE 2027 introduces several important changes.

1. New Robotics & Automation Paper

A new Robotics & Automation (RA) test paper has been introduced from GATE 2027.

2. Textile Engineering & Fibre Science

The Textile Engineering & Fibre Science (TF) paper will now be part of the Engineering Sciences (XE) sectional paper as XE9.

3. Changes in Sectional Paper Codes

The codes for sections under XE, XH and XL have been changed for GATE 2027.

GATE 2027 Marking Scheme

Questions carry either 1 mark or 2 marks.

Negative Marking

For incorrect MCQ answers:

  • 1-mark MCQ → 1/3 mark deducted
  • 2-mark MCQ → 2/3 mark deducted

There is:

  • No negative marking for MSQ
  • No negative marking for NAT
  • No partial marking

GATE 2027 Application Fee

The application fee is charged per test paper.

Documents Required for GATE 2027 Application

Candidates should keep the required documents ready before filling the application form.

GATE 2027 will be conducted at examination centres spread across 300+ cities in India.

Candidates can choose three examination cities, but all three choices must be from the same GATE zone. The GATE Committee may add/remove cities or allot a different city because of operational constraints.

No printed Admit Card will be sent by post. Candidates must appear at the examination centre on the date and reporting time mentioned on the Admit Card.

The notification date for examination cities is scheduled for 4 January 2027, while the Admit Card date is currently TBA.


GATE 2027 Result

The official result announcement is scheduled for:

19 March 2027

Results will be announced through the GATE Online Application Processing System/official GATE website.

The GATE 2027 scorecard will be available for qualified candidates, and the scorecard will remain valid for three years from the date of announcement of the results.


GATE 2027 Score Validity

The GATE 2027 score is valid for three years from the date of announcement of the results.

There is no provision for issuing a hard copy of the GATE scorecard.

Postgraduate Admission

Candidates can seek admission, subject to the rules of the concerned institute, to:

Scholarship / Assistantship

Candidates admitted to eligible postgraduate programmes at centrally funded institutions may receive financial assistance according to the rules of the admitting institute and applicable Government of India guidelines.

PSU Recruitment

The GATE brochure also notes that several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have used GATE scores in their recruitment processes in previous years.

Important: Qualifying GATE does not automatically guarantee admission, scholarship or a PSU job. Final admission/recruitment depends on the rules and selection process of the concerned institute or employer.


GATE 2027 for Textile Engineering & Fibre Science Students

One particularly important change for students from Textile Engineering & Fibre Science is that the TF paper is now included as XE9 – Textile Engineering & Fibre Science under the Engineering Sciences paper.

Candidates appearing for XE must answer:

  • General Aptitude – 15 marks
  • XE0 Engineering Mathematics – 15 marks
  • Any two sections from XE1 to XE9

Each optional XE section carries 35 marks.

This is particularly important when selecting the paper during the GATE 2027 application process.
